Day 1: San José

Welcome to San José, a city buzzing with electricity and frenetic energy. Culture comes alive on the streets here, and you'll have an evening to explore this concrete jungle by yourself. Check-in to Barceló San José and prepare to set off on your adventure the next day.

Days 2 & 3: Tortuguero

Pass through the sprawling Braulio Carrillo National Park en route to Tortuguero, stopping for breakfast. The afternoon means a fascinating tour of Tortuguero, including a visit to the Turtle Conservation Museum and a lively nearby village. Return to Laguna Lodge for dinner. The next day, spend the morning on a laid-back boat trip through Tortuguero’s canals, then return to the hotel for lunch. In the evening, you’ll have the option to go and spy on turtles spawning on the beach (July - September; $15 entrance free required).

Day 4: Guapiles & Arenal

Set off for the charming city of Guapiles, arriving in time for lunch. Then, it’s time to pick up your rental car and continue to La Fortuna, where the dramatic Arenal Volcano is located - it’s one of the most spectacular in the country. Arrive at Tilajari Resort & Conference Resort and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Days 5 & 6: Arenal

Be sure to fuel up this morning, because today you’re climbing a volcano. Spend the morning at leisure, then meet your guide in the afternoon to embark on a volcano hike along paths created by lava flows. Admire the plant life which grows in such incredible diversity, and afterwards, opt to visit a hot spring to soothe your weary legs - choose between the Tabacón Hot Springs experience with dinner (£98 per person) or a pass to Paradise Hot Springs (£52 per person). The next day, you’ll have some time to explore the divine Arenal by yourself for the day - there’s plenty to discover in the National Park, however if you’re feeling adventurous, opt to go horseback riding in the wilderness, enjoying the backdrop of a rainforest as you ride (£57 per person, including lunch).

Days 7-9: Monteverde

Set off for Monteverde, travelling along the banks of Lake Arenal and witness some spectacular views of the volcano. Upon arrival, check into Monteverde Rustic Lodge in and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Take an optional Monteverde Canopy Tour and cross one of the longest zip lines in the country, 900 feet in the air - a must for the thrill-seekers. (£42 per person). On your second day here, it’s time to take an excursion to the Hanging Bridges to take in views from the treetops in Monteverde. In the evening, there’s the option to join a night walk to discover the local nocturnal wildlife (£41 per person). Take your last day here at your own pace, or explore the Curi-Cancha Biological Reserve on an optional excursion (£54 per person).

Days 10-12: Tamarindo

Make the drive to Tamarindo today, an area known for its spectacular beaches, super-cool surfing and electric nightlife. You’ll be staying at Wyndham Tamarindo, which is close to many of these sun-kissed beaches. Here, it’s all about rest and relaxation: take the next few days to recharge your batteries, or pick an excursion or two to join: from a boat safari along the Tamarindo Estuary (£36 per person) or a catamaran tour, where you’ll spot whales, dolphins and rays frolicking in the waters (£77 per person).

Days 13 & 14: San José

Drive back to the capital today, and spend some time familiarising yourself with its vibrant culture: admire the Neoclassical architecture and try some of the quirky cafés that litter its streets. The best way to see the city might be to opt for a guided city tour, where you’ll see The National Theatre, the Art Museum, Metropolitan Cathedral and more (£57 per person). Then, it’s one final night in the city before your flight home the next day.
